Product Description
The Fanggu Yixing teapot traces its origin to the war drums used on ancient Chinese battlefields. As a vital tool to boost troop morale during military confrontations, war drums played a key role in the age-old military rituals — "beating the drum to encourage advance" and "ringing the gong to signal retreat" both referred to the use of these drums. In fact, the original name "Fanggu" should be "Fanggu (Imitating the Drum)", as the design was initially modeled after the shape of a drum.
This iconic teapot shape was first created by Shao Daheng, a master craftsman of the Qing Dynasty. His original intention was to craft a teapot body that mimicked the form of a drum. Later, as subsequent craftsmen replicated this distinctive shape, it gradually became known as "Fanggu (Imitating the Ancient)", signifying a teapot style that emulates ancient designs.
